November 14, 2025The Best Dog Boots for a Small Dogs like a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
You’re ready for a crisp winter walk with your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, but the moment you step outside, your Cavalier starts doing the cold paw dance, lifting one paw, then another, looking at you like, “Really, human? You expect me to walk in this?”
If you’ve ever watched your Cavalier tiptoe through snow or salt, you know that those delicate paws need protection. But here’s the challenge, finding dog boots for small dogs that actually stay on those furry feet without making your Cavalier freeze like a statue.
I totally understand. Angel Dexter tried countless pairs of dog booties, watched him stumble around, and dealt with boots that flew off mid-walk. Now, with Stewart, I wanted to test and review some dog boots that looked like they had potential, and I’m going to share those results with my fellow Cavalier families.
In this dog boot review, I’m sharing our hands-on experience with three different paw protection options specifically tested on Stewart’s Cavalier King Charles Spaniel-sized feet. You’ll see real footage of him walking in each pair, learn which ones actually stayed put during our adventures, and discover which option worked best for different situations, from winter snow boots to quick potty breaks or cold days.
Whether you’re searching for dog boots for small dogs, waterproof dog boots for rainy days, or winter dog boots that can handle serious snow, this dog boot guide will help you find the perfect fit for your Cavalier’s precious paws.

Why Cavalier King Charles Spaniels Need Dog Boots
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have the cutest paws, especially if they keep those Grinch feet. But, those adorable furry paw pads are a magnet for snow balls! And their delicate paw pads are NOT like shoes, and more than your feet are.
Here’s why your Cavalier might need paw protection:

Temperature extremes matter. Those fluffy paw slippers might look warm, but the pads underneath are sensitive. Hot pavement in summer can cause burns in seconds, while winter ice and snow can lead to frostbite. Cavaliers are companion dogs bred for comfort, not Arctic expeditions.
Salt and chemicals are harsh. Winter sidewalks covered in ice-melting chemicals can irritate, crack, and even poison your pup if they lick their paws afterward. Small dog boots create a barrier between delicate pads and these harmful substances.
Injury protection is real. From broken glass to sharp rocks, our city and suburban environments have hidden dangers. A cut pad can take weeks to heal and makes every walk painful.

Now, I know what you’re thinking: “But will my Cavalier actually wear boots?” That’s the million-dollar question, and I’m going to show you exactly how to teach your Cavalier to not just tolerate boots, but walk normally in them.
How to Measure Your Cavalier’s Paws for Dog Boots
Getting the right fit is absolutely crucial if you want dog boots that stay on. Too loose, and they’ll fly off mid-walk. Too tight, and your Cavalier will be miserable.
Here’s how to measure correctly: You’ll need: A piece of paper, a pen, and a ruler or measuring tape.

Place your Cavalier’s paw on a piece of paper while they’re standing naturally. Weight-bearing makes a difference in paw size.
Mark the paper at the furthest points, the very tip of the longest nail and the back of the pad.
Measure the distance between these marks. This is your paw length.
For width, measure across the widest part of the paw, typically at the base of the pads.
Repeat for front and back paws. Yes, both.

Here’s what many people don’t realize: Your Cavalier’s front paws and back paws are almost certainly different sizes. Front paws tend to be larger because they carry more weight. Measure each one individually and order accordingly if the boots come in different sizes for front and back.
The furry paw slipper factor. Cavaliers have those gorgeous feathered feet, and all that fur changes the dimension of the paw. Some dogs have minimal feathering, while others have full Grinch feet. More fur means you might need to size up, especially in boots with narrow openings. But don’t forget, the bottoms of your Cavalier’s paws should be trimmed and tidy.
When in doubt, contact the company. Most dog boot manufacturers would rather help you get the right size the first time than deal with returns. Email them your measurements along with photos of your Cavalier’s paws, both from above and from the side. A quick email can save you time, money, and frustration.
Teaching Your Cavalier to Wear Dog Boots
Most dogs don’t immediately love wearing boots. Your Cavalier might lift their paws high like a show horse, walk backward, or simply freeze and stare at you with betrayed eyes. This is completely normal.
The secret? Go slow, be patient, and make it ridiculously rewarding.
Here’s how to train your dog to walk in dog boots

Start Without Boots
Hopefully your Cavalier already enjoys having their paws touched. If they’re still getting used to it or you see even a hint of hesitation, don’t skip this step. Confident paw handling makes the whole boot process easier and far more enjoyable for your dog. You can watch my short video here for a gentle, step by step demo.

If your Cavalier is nervous about paw handling or new gear, you’ll find step-by-step guidance in my Manners, Life Skills, and Foundation Training Course at https://royalpupstrainingandwellbeing.com/. One of the early lessons teaches you how to make grooming and handling enjoyable, an important skill for boot-wearing and paw care.
Introduce the Boots Gradually

The Sniff Test Place one boot on the floor and let your Cavalier investigate. When they sniff it, say “YES!” and treat. Toss the treat away from the boot so they can come back and investigate again. Do this about five times. That’s it. Repeat that process as needed until your dog is happily investigating.
One Dog Boot On Put one boot on your Cavalier’s front paw and secure it. Before they can even think about shaking it off, start treating. Treat, treat, treat, one treat every two seconds while talking happily to them. After about ten treats, remove the boot, say “YES!” one more time, and give a final treat. Walk away and do something else. Let your Cavalier process what just happened.
Two Dog Boots On This time put dog boots on both front paws. Keep that treat party going. Some Cavaliers will immediately try to shake the boots off or high-step around. Stay calm, keep treating, and walk backward and encourage your Cavalier to catch up for the treat. Most dogs adjust within a couple of minutes of movement.
Add the Back Dog Boots Once your Cavalier can walk somewhat normally in front boots, add the back ones. Back feet sometimes are more sensitive about having things on them. Be patient and keep those treats coming. Walk and reward your Cavalier for walking with you around the house.
Short Walk Put all four dog boots on your Cavalier, treat while you’re doing it, then immediately take your Cavalier for a short walk, still rewarding generously along the way. Movement helps them forget about the boots. Praise enthusiastically for every step they take.

Tips for Success

Make it fun. The more positive associations your Cavalier has with boots, the faster they’ll accept them. Never scold or get frustrated if your pup struggles.
Practice indoors first. Don’t wait until you’re about to leave for a walk in the snow. Indoor practice sessions with no pressure are essential.
Keep early sessions short. Five minutes is plenty. You want to end on a positive note, not when your dog is stressed.
Use high-value rewards. Boring treats or dog food won’t cut it. Think more like cooked meat or freeze-dried meat treats. Check out the blog on the best treats for a Cavalier.
Distraction works. Once your Cavalier has their dog boots on, immediately do something fun. Play fetch, practice tricks, or go for that walk. The busier their brain, the less they’ll focus on their feet.
Patience wins. Some Cavaliers take to boots immediately. Others need weeks of gradual conditioning. Go at your dog’s pace.

The Prancing Phase is Normal Almost every dog goes through a stage where they lift their paws super high. This is totally normal and usually passes within a few minutes once they start moving. Don’t laugh (okay, you can laugh, it is pretty funny), but don’t make a big deal about it either. Just keep walking and encouraging.
If your Cavalier absolutely freezes and won’t move, try tossing a treat a few feet away. Most dogs will forget about the boots long enough to get the treat, and that first step breaks the freeze.
The Best Dog Boots for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Every Cavalier is a little different, and the best dog boots for one may not be the perfect match for another. Paw shape, confidence level, activity level, and even how much feathering they have can all affect how a boot fits. Weather conditions matter too. Light waterproof socks may be great for quick potty trips on wet grass, while sturdier winter dog boots are better for icy sidewalks or salted streets. Some Cavaliers walk beautifully in flexible rubber soles, while others do better with a soft fabric boot that hugs the paw. The key is choosing a style that fits your Cavalier’s individual needs and the conditions you’ll be walking in. Once you find the right match, winter outings become much more comfortable and safer for your Cavalier.
Small Dog Boot Review

Anti Slip Dog Socks Review
These Anti Slip Dog Socks Boots are a soft, lightweight option for Cavaliers who need paw protection on cold days without the bulk of a traditional winter dog boot. They are more like a flexible dog sock, which can make them easier for sensitive or hesitant dogs to accept. I like them for winter weather that is cold but not extremely snowy. They kept Stewart’s paws dry on damp sidewalks, and the rubber grip added steady traction. Even though the back of the socks looked a little floppy, they still stayed on during our walk around the block, which is impressive for a sock style boot.
These work well for quick outside potty breaks, or days when you need something comfortable that keeps salt and moisture off the paw pads. They are easy to put on, breathable, and gentle enough for dogs who dislike heavier boots. The waterproof bottom also helps keep paws cleaner. They are not meant for deep snow or long winter outings, but for everyday cold weather use, they are a convenient and practical option for many Cavaliers.
Stewart wore the Small/Medium size. The full set weighed 71 grams.  Shop here
Canada Pooch Dog Boots Review
These Canada Pooch Dog Winter Boots were the pair Stewart wore during his very first winter, and they served him well. They were easy for him to walk in, stayed on securely during our walks, and offered enough structure to keep his paws warm without feeling too heavy. The water resistant canvas held up nicely in light snow and slush, and the fleece lining kept his feet comfortable on colder days. The wide opening made them simple to put on, which is something every Cavalier parent can appreciate when dealing with wiggly paws.
These boots are a good choice for everyday winter walks, light snow, and chilly weather outings. The rubber sole provides steady traction outdoors, even on damp sidewalks. They fasten with a toggle at the top and a reflective velcro strap, which helped keep them secure without squeezing Stewart’s ankles. If I were to use this brand again this year, I would probably need to check whether Stewart needs the next size up since he’s now an adult. For Cavaliers who need a reliable winter dog boot that is warm, easy to use, and comfortable for regular walking, these are a strong option.
Stewart wore the size 2. The full set weighed 128 grams. Shop here
Spark Paws Waterproof Dog Boots Review
These Spark Paws Waterproof Dog Boots are a sturdy, winter friendly option for Cavaliers who need more protection than a lightweight sock style boot can offer. They have a taller profile and three connection points, including a top drawstring and two velcro straps, which helped me get a secure fit without feeling tight on Stewart’s ankles. The heavier sole provides solid traction on icy patches and uneven areas, and they held up well during our walk around the block. I also appreciated the purple color, which definitely added some charm to his winter gear.
These dog boots work well for winter weather, snowy sidewalks, and the kind of cold days when you want something strong, warm, and supportive. The fleece lining kept Stewart comfortable, and the taller boot height will help keep snow out. They are heavier than the thinner styles we tested, but that extra structure is what makes them a good choice for winter outings. The reflective details are also a helpful touch for darker winter evenings.
Stewart wore the size 3. The full set weighed 168 grams.  Shop here
Final Thoughts: Are Dog Boots Worth It for Cavaliers?
Dog boots for small dogs are absolutely worth the initial hassle of finding the right fit and teaching your Cavalier to wear them. Those first few awkward practice sessions pay off when you can take comfortable walks year-round without worrying about burned pads in summer or chemical irritation in winter.
Yes, your Cavalier might look at you with those big brown eyes like you’ve betrayed them the first time you put boots on. Yes, you’ll probably laugh at the high-stepping walk. And yes, you might feel a little silly buying shoes for your dog.
But when you see your pup confidently walking across the snow without stopping to lick their paws, or maintaining traction on icy sidewalks, you’ll know it was worth it.
The key is finding dog boots that stay on, because the best dog boots in the world are useless if they’re flying off every few steps. Take accurate measurements, consider your Cavalier’s feathering, and don’t hesitate to reach out to manufacturers with questions.
Remember, go slow with teaching your dog to wear boots. Those practice sessions spread over a week or two create a lifetime of comfortable paw protection. Your Cavalier is worth that small investment of time.
Now get out there and protect those precious Cavalier paws, winter, summer, rain, or shine. You got this!

Best Outdoor Gear for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
Cavaliers love their walks and outdoor adventures, but they also need protection and comfort in every season. The right outdoor gear keeps your Cavalier safe, warm, and ready to explore, whether you are walking through snow, rain, or sunshine. Here are my top outdoor essentials every Cavalier family should have.
Harnesses for Comfort and Safety
A well-fitted dog harness is one of the most important pieces of equipment for a Cavalier. Their delicate necks and small frames make collars risky for leash walking. A harness supports their chest and shoulders evenly, preventing strain and giving you gentle control without pressure on the throat. When choosing a harness, look for soft padding, secure buckles, and a fit that allows natural movement. You can read my full review of the top seven harnesses for Cavaliers here.
Waterproof Dog Winter Jacket
Cavaliers may have long coats, but that doesn’t mean they are protected from the cold. This Waterproof Dog Winter Jacket keeps your Cavalier dry and warm during snowy or windy walks. The waterproof outer layer blocks moisture, while the soft fleece lining traps body heat and adds comfort. Adjustable straps at the neck and chest make it easy to fit, and reflective stripes improve visibility during evening walks. The high collar adds extra warmth and the small back pocket makes it adorable and functional for winter outings. Pick it up here

My dear friend Mieko of Meek By Design created custom sweaters for Angel Dexter and now Stewart, and they have become cherished keepsakes. Each sweater is handmade with care, designed to fit your Cavalier perfectly, and made from high-quality yarn that feels soft and cozy. These custom pieces are warm, practical, and full of heart. October 28, 2025Best Harness for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Finding the best harness for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can feel overwhelming. There are so many styles and claims about comfort and control, but what really matters is how the dog harness fits your Cavalier’s body. Cavaliers are small companion dogs with delicate necks and shoulders, and many also live with Chiari malformation or syringomyelia. Because of these sensitivities, it’s especially important that their harness supports natural movement and avoids any pressure on the neck or spine. In this article, Stewart helps demonstrate several of the best harnesses for small dogs to show how design, strap placement, and fit affect comfort and freedom of motion.

Why choose a dog harness instead of a collar
A well-fitted dog harness helps protect every dog’s neck and spine by spreading pressure across the chest and shoulders instead of the throat. When a dog wearing a collar pulls or moves suddenly, that force goes directly to the neck and can cause strain or discomfort. This is especially important for small dogs and breeds like the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, who are prone to neck and spine sensitivities, including Chiari malformation and syringomyelia. A properly fitted dog harness supports their body evenly, allowing the shoulders to move freely while keeping the neck safe. Even if your Cavalier doesn’t have any diagnosed health issues, choosing the best harness for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel instead of a collar is one of the simplest ways to protect them from unnecessary pressure and keep walks comfortable.
Do harnesses make dogs pull on the leash
A common myth is that harnesses cause dogs to pull, but that’s not true. Harnesses don’t teach pulling any more than a seat belt teaches someone to drive too fast. Pulling happens when a dog hasn’t yet learned how to walk politely on a leash. That’s where positive reinforcement training comes in. When we teach our dogs that staying close earns rewards, walking together becomes an enjoyable activity for both you and your Cavalier.
Best harness for dogs that pull
When your dog pulls on the leash, it can make walks stressful for both of you. Many harnesses now offer two leash attachment points to help with this. The back clip is what I use most often and recommend for daily walks. It keeps the leash centered, allows your dog to move naturally, and prevents pressure on the neck or shoulders.
Some harnesses also include a front clip, often called a no-pull option. This can be helpful during training because it gently turns your dog toward you when they pull, giving you a moment to refocus their attention. It’s best used as a short-term teaching tool, not an everyday setup. If your dog continues to walk forward while clipped in front, the harness can twist their body and cause strain over time. For Cavaliers, and most small dogs, clipping to the back is the most comfortable and balanced choice once leash manners are learned.
If you’d like a little extra help teaching your Cavalier to walk politely on a leash, my Manners, Life Skills, and Foundation Training Course at https://royalpupstrainingandwellbeing.com/ is open to all breeds, with special support for Cavaliers. The lessons focus on connection, confidence, and teamwork, helping you create enjoyable walks built on trust.
Finding the best harness for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Even within the same breed, no two Cavaliers are built exactly alike. Some have broader chests, longer backs, or thicker coats. Look at Dexter and Stewart. Dexter was at his ideal weight at 28 lbs, while Stewart is at his ideal weight of 19 lbs! And for those living with Chiari malformation or syringomyelia, their sensitivity areas can vary from one Cavalier to another. What feels perfect on one Cavalier may rub or restrict another. That’s why it’s important to look at how the harness rests on your Cavalier’s body rather than only using the dog harness size chart by breed.
When looking for the best dog harness for Stewart, I focus on four main points:

The harness should sit on the chest, not on the throat.
The straps behind the front legs should allow space for movement without rubbing.
The harness should rest evenly across the shoulders without shifting too much to one side.
Stewart should be able to walk, sit, and lie down comfortably while wearing it.

What is a Y-style harness and why I chose them
A Y-style harness is named for the shape it makes across the dog’s chest. The straps form a Y that starts at the shoulders and meets at the breastbone. This design allows the front legs to move freely and helps distribute pressure across the chest instead of the neck. For Cavaliers, that freedom of movement and pressure relief make Y-style harnesses one of the best harness options.
When fitted correctly, the front connection of the Y should rest right on the breastbone, not on the throat or soft tissue. The straps along the sides should sit just behind your dog’s shoulders, giving the front legs room to move freely. There should be a small space between the strap and the back of the front legs so it doesn’t rub or pinch. The belly strap should rest on the ribcage, not on the soft part of the stomach. A well-fitted Y harness allows your dog to walk naturally, stretch their legs forward, and move without feeling restricted.
How should a dog harness fit
When you’re fitting a harness for your Cavalier, the goal is to keep pressure off the neck, shoulders, and spine while still giving full freedom of movement. You’ll rarely find a harness that’s perfect in every way, so small adjustments and choosing the best for your Cavalier matter. Take your time to fit it carefully and check your Cavalier’s movement after each change.
Here’s what to look for:

Between the legs: The section between the front legs should be narrow enough not to rub the inside of the legs. A chest piece that’s too wide can change how your dog moves and may cause irritation over time.
Shoulders: The shoulder joints are easy to spot once you feel just below the top of the front legs. The straps should never cross or press on this area. The harness should sit behind the shoulders so your dog can extend their front legs freely when walking.
Chest bone: The front of the harness should rest right on the breastbone, not up on the throat. You can find this spot by gently running your hand down your dog’s chest until you feel the firm ridge of bone in the center. This is where the “Y” of the harness should meet.
Behind the front legs: Leave a small space between the strap and the back of the front legs. Too close and it can rub; too far back and it can press into the soft belly area. The strap should sit just on the ribcage where the body is firm.
Tightness check: You should be able to slide two fingers under the straps without lifting the harness away from the body. If it rides up, twists, or leaves marks, readjust.

The right fit rests evenly on the chest and ribcage, away from the throat and shoulders, and lets your Cavalier walk, sit, and lie down comfortably.
Why a Y-style dog harness can rotate to the side
Double-check your Cavalier’s harness fit before each walk to be sure it’s sitting correctly. If you notice the harness shifting a little to one side, that’s usually normal. Y-style harnesses vary in how structured they are. Some have solid panel chests, while others, like the ones I use with Stewart, are lighter and made mostly of straps. The more flexible the harness, the more it can move slightly when the leash pulls from one side.
This small amount of rotation isn’t a problem as long as the harness settles back into place and your Cavalier can walk comfortably. A light, strappy design is often ideal for small breeds because it keeps pressure off sensitive areas, dries quickly, and allows natural movement. If you prefer a more solid Y-style with a chest plate, make sure the plate isn’t too wide or heavy, as that can limit front leg reach.
To minimize rotation, check that both sides of the straps are adjusted evenly and that the leash clip is centered. A little movement during a walk is expected, it simply means the harness is flexible enough to move with your Cavalier’s body. Just make small adjustments as you see needed during your walk to keep everything sitting comfortably in place.
Best harness for Cavalier King Charles Spaniel: Stewart’s fit reviews
Each of the harnesses Stewart tried is listed starting with the lightest to the heaviest. I’ll share what I observed about fit, comfort, weight, and ease of adjustment so you can see how each one might work for your Cavalier’s body type.
Remember, every Cavalier is built a little differently, so what fits one perfectly may not fit another the same way. Always measure your Cavalier before ordering and follow the brand’s sizing guide carefully. For example, Angel Dexter and Stewart wouldn’t wear the same size even though they’re both Cavaliers. Taking a few minutes to measure first can make a big difference in comfort and safety.
Side note. Because Cavaliers have long coats, the fit can look a little deceptive on camera, so feeling the harness with your hands is the best way to check placement on your own dog.

Watch them all in action.
Mesh Step-In Dog Harness Review
This simple mesh step-in harness is lightweight and easy to use. The breathable material feels soft against Stewart’s coat, and the narrow front helps prevent chafing. It sits close to the back of his front legs and rests across the shoulders, which I generally prefer to avoid, but it’s still soft enough not to cause discomfort. With only one adjustment point on the belly, the fit can’t be fine-tuned.
It’s very quick to put on and has been an easy option for my mom to use when she watches Stewart. The simple design makes it convenient for short outings and keeps things easy for both of them.

2 Hounds Design Freedom No Pull Dog Harness Review
The 2 Hounds Design Freedom No Pull Dog Harness is one I have used for many years with both Stewart and my beloved Angel Dexter. It has been a comfortable and reliable fit for many years. One thoughtful feature is the Swiss velvet lining along the belly strap, which helps prevent fur from catching or rubbing, something I have always appreciated for Cavaliers and their silky coats.
It adjusts around the neck, chest, and belly, though not along the back. The design is a little different from most Y style harnesses, with the sides more enclosed and the belly strap sitting closer to the back of the front legs. For Stewart, this placement was noticeable but still allowed natural movement and a good range of motion.

Roses&Poetry Dog Harness Review
The Roses&Poetry Dog Harness gave Stewart a very good fit once adjusted. I was able to keep the front section resting on his chest, not on his neck, and the belly strap sat at an ideal distance behind his front legs so he could move comfortably. The harness is light and soft on him, and while it shifted slightly during our walk, it stayed balanced overall.
The sliders hold their position well for regular use, but if the leash gets tight, they can give a little and make the straps slightly longer. It’s not something that happens often, though I like to check the fit every so often just to keep it adjusted properly. The small handle on top is lightweight but handy when I need to steady Stewart or secure him in his PupSaver. The reflective detailing adds a bit of extra safety for early morning or evening walks.

Blue-9 Balance Harness Review
The Blue-9 Balance Harness fit Stewart well overall and was easy to adjust at the neck, chest, and belly. The front triangle ring helped shape the harness into a natural Y, keeping it positioned on his chest rather than his neck. The back adjustment worked fine, but it didn’t extend as much as I would have liked, so the belly strap sat a little closer to the back of his front legs than ideal.
The harness is made from standard webbing, which keeps it light and flexible but can allow a bit of sliding if the leash is pulled. It still stayed fairly even throughout our walk and didn’t cause any rubbing. The fit was secure, and the adjustments held their position nicely once set.
Size worn: Small Weight: 106 grams Leash attachment: Two options (front and back) Shop Online
PETFORTA Anatomical Dog Harness Review
The PETFORTA Anatomical Dog Harness gave Stewart a really nice fit right from the start. With seven adjustment points along the neck, chest, belly, and back, it was easy to shape it evenly to his body. I liked how I could keep the front section resting gently on his chest, not up on his neck, and position the belly strap at just the right spot behind his front legs. Once fitted, the thicker webbing held its place well so nothing loosened as we walked.
The triangular connectors are a thoughtful detail. They guide the straps into a true Y shape that follows the shoulders instead of crossing the throat, keeping pressure off the neck and allowing Stewart to move freely. During our walks, the harness stayed balanced and didn’t slide around, which made it comfortable for him the entire time.
Each strap includes reflective strips for extra visibility, and the overall design felt balanced and secure once fitted. It stayed in place well during our walks and gave Stewart a comfortable, natural range of movement.

Hurtta Casual ECO Dog Harness Review
The Hurtta Casual ECO Dog Harness is made with recycled materials and includes padding around the neck and chest for added comfort. The webbing has built-in 3M reflectors for visibility, which is a nice touch for evening walks.
For Stewart, this harness was not a good fit. It only adjusts around the belly, and that limited range made it much too large for his frame. The neck strap is not adjustable, which makes it difficult to get a secure and balanced fit, especially on smaller dogs like Cavaliers. While the overall design allows for free shoulder movement, the lack of adjustability kept me from being able to position it correctly on Stewart’s body.
Size worn: 20–24 inches  Weight: 126 grams  Leash attachment: Back Shop Online
LufeLux Dog Harness Review
The LufeLux Dog Harness has a sturdy feel with stiffer webbing, which helps the sliders stay securely in place once adjusted. The neck, chest, belly, and back all adjust, though the neck adjustment is not completely even. If your dog needs the full length on that setting, the harness will be slightly off balance. Once fitted for Stewart, it stayed stable and did not loosen during our walk.
The webbing handle on top is firm and stands upright, which makes it easy to use when securing Stewart in his PupSaver. It is helpful for that purpose, though if your dog crawls under or over things, like in dog parkour, it could get caught. The overall fit felt solid and supportive, with no sliding or shifting once adjusted.

August 9, 2025Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Puppy Essentials Check List
Bringing home a new Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming without a plan. That’s where this Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Puppy Essentials Check List comes in. Whether you’re a first time Cavalier parent or adding another Cavalier puppy to your home, this new puppy check list will help you prepare for those first 48 hours and beyond with confidence, clarity, and connection.
With nearly thirty years of experience as a positive dog trainer, I know how important it is to set your Cavalier up for success from day one. Having the right puppy essentials and structure in place makes potty training your Cavalier easier, builds trust, and helps prevent common behavior struggles.
Let’s walk through what you truly need for a new Cavalier puppy and what’s worked well for the families I’ve guided over the years.
What are the best harnesses for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?
When it comes to walking your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy or adult Cavalier, I always recommend starting with a well-fitted harness instead of a collar. Cavaliers are delicate around the neck and shoulders, and a harness helps protect those sensitive areas. My favorite harness for most Cavaliers is the Freedom No-Pull Harness, it fits well, clips in front or back, and helps prevent pulling without discomfort. I pair it with a sturdy 6 foot leash that has a secure snap, like a trigger snap, not a flimsy clip. For outdoor adventures, I also like using a 30 to 50 foot long line so my Cavalier can explore while staying safely connected.
Does my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy need an ID tag and microchip?
Yes, every Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy should have both an ID tag and a microchip. I like flat tags that slide onto the collar instead of dangling, since they’re quieter and less tempting to chew. And while I hope you never need it, a microchip can be a lifesaver if your Cavalier ever gets lost. It’s a simple step that adds an important layer of protection.
Should I get a GPS tracker for my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy?
Yes. A GPS tracker can be one of the most valuable tools if your Cavalier puppy ever slips out or gets lost. It gives you a way to locate them quickly and easily, even if they’re out of sight. I use the PitPat GPS Tracker with Stewart because it offers real-time location tracking with unlimited range. Unlike Bluetooth trackers that rely on nearby devices, PitPat uses GPS so I always know where Stewart is. There are no subscriptions or hidden fees, and the app is simple to use. You can use code STEWART40 for $40 off PitPat GPS Trackers at checkout (valid through December 31, 2025, on non-sale items).
What is the best crate for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?
The best crate for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel depends on your puppy’s size and personality. I usually suggest starting with a 30 inch crate, but Cavaliers can vary quite a bit in size. Dexter was a lean 30 pounds as an adult, while Stewart is a lean 18 pounds. So it’s always best to measure your puppy and adjust accordingly. Wire crates are popular because they offer airflow and visibility, but they’re not the right fit for every puppy. Some Cavaliers may feel more secure in a plastic crate with solid sides, especially if they’re sensitive to movement or noise. The key is choosing a crate that is the right size, feels safe, and offers a comfortable place to rest. I also like using X pens and baby gates with doors to create puppy safe zones around the house. Some families prefer an X pen during the day and a crate at night, or a combination depending on how their puppy adjusts.
What is the best crash tested dog car seat for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?
Finding the best crash tested car seat for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is about more than comfort. It is about safety. Many dog car seats are not crash tested, and even some that claim to be do not pass independent testing. For a small breed like the Cavalier, that matters. A properly tested car seat can help protect your puppy in the event of an accident, keeping them securely positioned and reducing the risk of injury. I use the PupSaver car seat with Stewart because it was designed for small dogs, has passed crash testing, and surrounds your Cavalier in a soft, protective rear facing seat. It works in the back or front seat and gives me peace of mind every time we drive. PupSaver is one of the only crash tested car seats I fully trust for Cavaliers. You can use promo code Stewart25 for $25 off your PupSaver.
Wondering what the safest, crash tested dog car seat is for your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? This video shows you my top choice and why it works so well for our Cavaliers.

What is the best dog bed for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?
The best dog bed for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel really depends on your Cavalier puppy’s age, size, and how they like to sleep. For young Cavaliers, I always start with something simple and safe, no zippers, buttons, or loose stuffing that could be chewed or swallowed. Flat mats or donut style beds tend to work well, especially if your puppy likes to curl up. Cooling mats can be helpful in warmer months, and orthopedic or memory foam beds are often a better fit for senior Cavalier King Charles Spaniels with joint stiffness. Dexter also used a PEMF bed for extra support, and I was really happy with the comfort it gave him. No matter which type of bed you buy for your Cavalier, be cautious during the Cavalier puppy teething stage. I hold off on leaving soft bedding in the crate when I am not in the room until I know my Cavalier can be trusted with it. During the day, I like to set up a soft resting spot in the living room or wherever we spend the most time together. It gives your Cavalier a place to settle while still being close to you.
What are the best toys for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?
Your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy is going to want to explore everything with their mouth, so having safe and engaging dog toys from the beginning makes a big difference. I look for toys that are soft but durable, with reinforced stitching and no small parts that could come loose. Brands like goDog and Fluff and Tuff have been my go to choices for years. They hold up better than most and keep my Cavaliers interested without falling apart. I also rotate toys every few days to keep things fresh and prevent boredom. The best toys for a Cavalier puppy are ones that encourage play and comfort without becoming a safety concern.
What are the best chews and bones for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?
Most Cavalier King Charles Spaniels love to chew, and having safe, healthy chews available from the start helps prevent boredom and protect your furniture. Chewing can also support dental health, though daily brushing is still ideal. I avoid hard bones, antlers, rawhides, and anything that could chip teeth or splinter. Dexter actually chipped a tooth on a hard bone, and that was the last one I ever gave him. What I use now are softer, natural options like dehydrated or freeze dried fish skins, bully sticks, tripe sticks, duck or rabbit feet, rabbit ears, and raw meaty bones. I also like tendons that most Cavaliers enjoy. Always supervise your Cavalier with any chew, and toss it once it gets small enough to swallow. Chews are not one size fits all, but with a little experimenting, you will find what works best for your Cavalier. Read our full article on choosing the best chew for your Cavalier.
What are the best treats for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?
The best treats for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel are made from simple, high quality ingredients that support their overall health. I always read the ingredient label. If it does not list real meat or recognizable whole foods, it does not go in Stewart’s treat jar. I avoid added salt, sugar, artificial flavoring, preservatives, byproducts, and anything vague like animal fat. My favorite treats are single ingredient proteins like rabbit, duck, or beef. I use freeze dried or dehydrated meats during dog training because they are easy to break up, easy to store, and highly motivating. I also use freeze dried dog food as training treats and just adjust Stewart’s meal portions so he is not getting extra calories. You can also make your own treats at home with a dehydrator or low temperature oven. Dehydrated meats and veggies are a simple and healthy option that most Cavaliers love. You Cavalier’s treats should always add to your Cavalier’s well being, not take away from it. Read our full article on choosing the best treats for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
What is the best food for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy or adult?
After going through the food journey with Dexter, I’ve learned that the best food for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel depends on your comfort level and your Cavalier’s individual needs. I currently feed a balanced DIY raw diet, but I don’t recommend jumping into homemade dog food unless you’re sure you can balance it properly for your Cavalier’s life stage. If you’re not ready to make it yourself, there are excellent prepared raw brands available. For a shelf-stable option, freeze dried dog food is a nice alternative. It’s less processed than kibble and is typically made with high quality ingredients. I stay away from dry kibble. No matter what route you take, your Cavalier’s food should support healthy digestion, weight, skin, and coat. A fresh, well balanced diet made all the difference in Dexter’s health and vitality, and it’s the same approach I take with Stewart today. Read our full article on choosing the best dog food for your Cavalier.
What are the best spaniel bowls for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?
When it comes to choosing the best dog bowls for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, I look for three things, safe materials, the right shape for their ears, and comfortable bowl height. I use stainless steel bowls for Stewart because they are durable, easy to clean, and help prevent facial irritation. Besides stainless steel bowls, Dexter also had a Spaniel bowl. Spaniel bowls are shaped deeper and narrower than traditional dog bowls. This helps keep those long, feathered Cavalier ears from dragging through food. I also use an elevated stand to raise the bowls to a more natural height. That way, my Cavalier doesn’t have to crouch low to eat, and the angle helps minimize mess. For Cavaliers with sensitive skin or allergies, staying away from plastic is especially important. Stainless steel and glass are always my top choices. Clean, safe, and designed to match your Cavalier’s needs.
What are the best brush and grooming tools for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel?
The best brush for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one that gently keeps their soft coat tangle free without damaging the hair. For daily use, I like a pin brush to smooth out the feathering and keep the coat looking polished. A soft slicker brush works well when light tangles pop up, especially behind the ears or around the legs, but I always use it carefully to avoid scratching the skin. I follow up with a steel comb to check spots like behind the ears, under the arms, and on the feet. If I come across a small knot, I’ll use a matting comb to gently work it out. To finish, I sometimes run a soft boar bristle brush over the coat to lay everything flat and work through sensitive areas like the belly. Daily brushing will really help make grooming a breeze.
For nail and foot care, I use a scissor style nail clipper or a pet safe grinder. I recommend handling your Cavalier’s feet a few times a week to help them get used to the feeling and sound, even outside of grooming sessions. Keeping nails short and checking foot hair regularly helps with both comfort and traction, and it’s a great opportunity to build trust through positive, gentle handling. Shop my favorite Cavalier grooming tools.
In this video series, I share step-by-step grooming tips for Cavaliers, from brushing and trimming to keeping ears, eyes, and coats healthy. You’ll see the products I use, the gentle techniques that keep grooming stress-free, and how to make the process a positive experience for your Cavalier.

What are the best potty training and clean up supplies for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy?
The best potty training and clean up supplies for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy are the ones that make your routine simple and stress free. I always recommend skipping potty pads, they tend to confuse things and can drag out training. Instead, have a good natural enzymatic cleaner or a diluted puppy shampoo on hand to clean up any accidents. You want something safe, effective, and gentle on surfaces your puppy will walk or lie on. Before your Cavalier puppy comes home, stock up on poop bags and keep extras in your car, your bag, and near your door. Having everything ready makes it easier to stay consistent and keep things clean while your puppy learns. Learn the best way to potty training your Cavalier in this article.
What should be in my dog’s first aid kit?
A well stocked dog first aid kit for your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is one of the most important things you can keep on hand for your dog. I like to start with the basics, gauze, vet wrap, gloves, tweezers, a digital thermometer, and a saline solution for cleaning wounds or flushing eyes. From there, I add natural remedies I’ve come to trust over the years. I always keep manuka honey, styptic powder, and aloe Vera gel nearby for minor cuts, burns, or skin irritation. I also include homeopathic remedies like Aconite or flower essences like CrisEase for stress and shock. Dog-safe antihistamines like Benadryl or natural options like quercetin can be helpful for mild allergic reactions. And don’t forget practical items like towels, an emergency contact card, flashlight, syringe, and even a tight fitting coat that can be used to stabilize wounds in a pinch. I’ve built Stewart’s first aid kit over time, based on what’s worked for my Cavaliers. You can start with a premade canine first aid kit and then customize it to fit your lifestyle. Shop pet first aid kit items.

November 12, 2024Best Treats for a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

If you’ve found this Cavalier blog by searching for “best treats for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels,” you’re probably wondering what makes a healthy dog treat for this special breed. Whether you’re looking for the best dog-training treats for your Cavalier or just healthy dog treats, it’s essential to choose options that benefit your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s health and waistline. Here’s what I consider when picking out healthy treats for Dexter.
Check the Ingredients in Your Cavalier’s Treats
The very first thing I do when choosing treats for Dexter is check the ingredients list. Don’t just rely on the fancy pictures on the front of the bag; the ingredient panel tells you what your Cavalier is actually eating. Even if a treat claims to be “chicken-flavored,” that doesn’t always mean it contains real chicken. Always look for whole, natural ingredients like real meat, vegetables, and fruits.
What to Avoid in Your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel’s Treats

Artificial Flavors: If you see “flavor” in the ingredient list, it’s likely a synthetic that’s meant to mimic real food. Real food ingredients are always better for your Cavalier’s health.
Added Salt: Too much salt can be harmful, especially for dogs with heart issues, like Cavaliers. Stick to treats with no added salt, as too much sodium can lead to health problems.
Preservatives: Treats should be free of artificial preservatives like potassium sorbate, sodium benzoates, BHA and BHT. These chemicals are commonly found in cheaper treats and can be harmful in the long run.
By-Products or Mystery Meat: Avoid any treats that list “meat by-products” or vague “animal fat.” We want to know exactly what’s going into our dog’s body.
Sugar or Sweeteners: Skip the sugary treats! Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can easily gain weight, and too many sugar-filled treats can contribute to obesity, which affects their health.
Grains: Many dogs, including Cavaliers, can be sensitive to corn, wheat, and soy. Grains also pack in a lot of calories. Stick to treats with grain-free ingredients.

Healthy Treats for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
So, what should you be looking for instead? The best treats for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are made from whole, natural ingredients. I always opt for treats made with high-quality meats, like rabbit, chicken, beef, or duck, and ingredients that support overall health.
When choosing healthy dog treats, I think about each ingredient and how it affects my dog’s health and diet. I prefer foods that can contribute to Dexter’s overall nutrition, not add-ons. If I think the treat’s ingredients are more like a candy bar, I’ll skip it.
Best Training Treats for Cavaliers
When I’m training Dexter, I want treats that are both nutritious and irresistible. Training treats should be small, easy to chew, and made from single-source protein. Some of my favorites include freeze-dried meat or dehydrated meat. These treats are not only high-value (meaning they’ll grab your Cavalier’s attention), but they’re also healthy and easy to use in training sessions.
I also may grab freeze dried dog food that consists of healthy ingredients and no fillers. They tend to be bite-sized, and I can easily cut down on some of Dexter’s fresh food for the day and replace it with the freeze-dried dog food. No extra calories needed, and he doesn’t lose any of his daily nutritional needs.
Treats for Occasional Snacking
When it’s time for a snack, I’m okay with a treat that’s a bit more substantial, like grain-free biscuits made with sweet potato or pumpkin. These treats are great for occasional use, but they do tend to be higher in calories and more ingredients. I like to keep Dexter’s treats simple and sweet.
My Top Picks for Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Treats

Dehydrated Meat: A simple, natural treat that’s great for training or as an occasional snack. Dehydrating your Cavalier’s meat treats at home is simple and can be done using a dehydrator or your oven. To start, slice the meat (like chicken, beef, or turkey) into thin, even strips, removing any fat. If using a dehydrator, set it to around 160°F and arrange the meat strips on the trays, ensuring they don’t overlap. Dehydrate for 6-12 hours, checking for proper dryness—meat should be firm and break easily. If using an oven, place the meat on a baking rack, set the oven to the lowest possible temperature, and prop the door open slightly to allow moisture to escape. Store a few treats in your Cavalier’s treat jar and the rest in the freezer to stay fresh.
Dehydrated Fruits and Veggies: Dehydrated fruits and vegetables are a great low-calorie treat for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, providing a crunchy, natural snack without added preservatives or artificial ingredients.

Can Cavaliers have carrots? For me, this is a yes and no. Yes, carrots are perfectly healthy and nutritious for your Cavalier. I know a lot of people recommend feeding large carrots to dogs as a chew, but I do think that may pose a choking risk. You must ensure your Cavalier is safely chewing the carrot and not swallowing big chunks. The same goes for baby carrots. For me, I prefer to feed Dexter carrots as little bits. But, I am definitely a proud helicopter mom. Make sure you read the article on healthy chews for your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel if you are wanting safe-and-natural chews.

Freeze-Dried Healthy Dog Food: Freeze-dried dog food can be an easy swap from their regular diet, making it a convenient and healthy treat option for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Plus it’s a great treat for picky eaters.
Freeze-Dried Meat Treats (Single Ingredient): Freeze-dried meat treats are a high-protein, single-ingredient snack for Cavaliers, providing a nutritious option.

July 24, 2024What Kind of Chew Toys and Bones are Safe for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels?

Most Cavalier King Charles Spaniels love to chew! Chewing is a natural and normal dog behavior that helps fight boredom and can even help keep your Cavalier’s teeth pearly white. But remember, brushing your Cavalier’s teeth daily is still ideal. Puppies and adolescent Cavaliers tend to have a high drive for chewing things. Sometimes, whatever they can sink those teeth into. Hopefully, you are working with a qualified dog trainer to ensure your Cavalier is learning to chew on the right items instead of your furniture, or, even worse, electrical cords or something else that can harm your Cavalier puppy.
So, what makes a chew toy or bone safe for your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel? Over the years, my opinion on this has evolved. I once opted for the harder, the better. But, now, I’m on the other side of the fence, choosing softer items. Hard and tough dog bones can chip teeth and even splinter, which can be very dangerous. Even my sweet, Dexter chipped his tooth on a hard bone….his last hard bone.
I personally do not use or recommend hard bones, antlers, hooves, plastic or nylon bones, rawhides, chews with lots of ingredients, wood bones, or weight-bearing bones. But, I will always say, this is my personal opinion, and they are your Cavaliers. You can do whatever you feel comfortable doing for them, and you will not be judged by me, nor should you be judged by your peers.
Please be aware that not every chew toy or bone will be suitable for every Cavalier. I strongly recommend active supervision when your Cavalier chews, particularly if it’s a new toy or bone or if the chew item is edible. The right size of a bone or toy is also important. You want to make sure the toy or bone is not so small that your Cavalier can place the entire item in their mouth and risk choking. This includes when the chew gets smaller. I tend to toss the end out before Dexter swallows it, with the exception of a chew that is crunchy. Finding the right chew for your Cavalier is sort of like “The Princess and the Pea.” So, let’s jump into my recommendations for safe and healthy chew bones for your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Dehydrated or Freeze-Dried Fish Skins:
With a good dehydrated or freeze-dried fish skin dog treat, the treat will be 100 percent fish skin with no artificial colors, preservatives, or flavors. With this list and anything I recommend, the first stop should be to read the actual ingredient panel. What’s inside. Everything. It’s also important to check out the packaging and carefully read the ingredient list and where the fish was caught and processed. Fish skins are great treats for your Cavalier, full of omega-3 fatty acids, typically low in fat, and fully edible. Most dogs love the taste and eagerly chew away. Some fish skins are crunchy, while others are chewy. Chewy ones last longer but need close supervision to make sure your Cavalier chews them up vs. swallowing a large piece. Shop now.
Bully Sticks & Pizzles:
Made from the manly part of a bull, many dogs love chewing on these. What I like is that they typically just start to get soft and disappear; I haven’t seen any pieces break off. However, I have seen a stick peel every once in a while, like string cheese. You can also purchase bully stick holders to help hold the stick, which adds a second layer of safety, helping to prevent your dog from swallowing the end. I personally toss that piece into the garbage. Again, sourcing and how they are manufactured is key. Natural does not correlate to not using irradiation (radiation). I contacted my fair share of bully stick brands and asked if they used irradiation, so, make sure you do your homework. Tip: get odor-free or low-odor versions. These can stink like crazy! Shop now.
Raw Bones:
Raw bones are another option for your Cavalier to chew on, especially if they are already on a raw diet or natural diet. Because the bones are not cooked, they are soft and unlikely to splinter. Cooked bones easily splinter and are very hard on teeth. The size will depend on the size of the bone and your Cavalier. A few options to consider include necks, wings, feet and tails. Once again, supervise and watch for choking or swallowing. Necks did not work for Dexter, as he thought he should just suck the whole thing down. Chewing Tips: Don’t clean the bones; feed them with some meat on them, as they come. Let your Cavalier pull on the meat and chew and lick the bone. Allow them to have them for an hour, then throw them away. It’s when they sit around the house, get buried, or get dried out that you get bacteria and splintering. They will last in the fridge for three days before feeding. They can also be frozen and thawed. Feed outside or on a towel, and make sure your Cavalier is wearing their snood!. Avoid weight-bearing bones, as dogs can chip or fracture their teeth due to how hard they are. Show now.
Dehydrated Duck/Chicken/Rabbit Feet/Ears:
Duck, chicken, and rabbit feet or ears are excellent, crunchy, edible chews for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Dehydrated or freeze-dried. Both offer good chewing options. Chicken and duck feet are rich in chondroitin, glucosamine, and collagen, which support joint health, reducing the risk of brittle bones, improving mobility, and maintaining healthy teeth and gums. Rabbit ears and feet are particularly appealing as they are low in fat, high in protein, and help clean your dog’s teeth while reducing plaque buildup. Additionally, the fur on rabbit ears can serve as a natural dewormer. These natural chews are both nutritious and enjoyable, but always supervise your Cavalier to ensure safe chewing. Shop now.
Tripe Sticks:
Tripe sticks are a fantastic chew option for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Typically made from the stomach lining of cattle, lamb, or goat, these chews are naturally rich in digestive enzymes and nutrients that support gut health. Tripe sticks provide a satisfying, chewy texture that most Cavaliers love, while also helping to clean their teeth and gums. They are full of nutrients that can be a great addition to your dog’s chew rotation. Shop now.
Beef Tails:
Beef tails are another excellent choice for your Cavalier. They are durable and provide a long-lasting chewing experience, which helps keep your Cavalier engaged and entertained. Beef tails are also high in protein and can help naturally clean your Cavalier’s teeth. The natural toughness of beef tails makes them a good option for aggressive chewers, but always make sure to choose the appropriate size to prevent any choking hazards. Shop now.
Tendons:
Tendons are a great chew for Cavaliers because they are tough yet somewhat flexible, providing a satisfying chew without being too hard on their teeth. They are also rich in collagen, which is beneficial for joint health. Tendons help keep your Cavalier’s teeth clean and their gums healthy. Most Cavaliers find the chewy texture very satisfying. Shop now.
Yak Chews:
Yak chews are a fantastic option for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, but I only recommend them when microwaved to make them poofy. Microwaving them creates a crunchy, airy texture that Cavaliers love, making them a safe and enjoyable option. They are rich in protein and calcium, supporting your dog’s overall health. Made from a mixture of yak and cow milk, these chews are rich in protein and calcium, supporting your dog’s overall health. Again, double check the ingredient label; not all are created equal.

Fillable Chew Toys:
I am a fan of filling various food toys such as West Paw Tux and Toppl with healthy snacks. The key to getting your Cavalier to chew on a food toy is to stuff it! If your Cavalier is eating the toy instead of the inside food, I do not recommend it. Shop now.

Ingredients matter!
If you’re considering chew bones made from various ingredients, it’s crucial to flip over the package and dive deep into the ingredient list. Not all chews are created equal, and some can contain nasty or even toxic substances that could harm your dog. Look for natural, wholesome ingredients and avoid artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. A little extra time spent reading labels can make a big difference in keeping your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel safe and healthy.

So, there you have it. That is the current list of some healthy and natural chew toys, bones I feel comfortable providing Dexter and recommending to my dog training clients. Always remember to supervise your Cavalier when they are chewing and to choose the right size and type of chew for their needs.
